‘Worship centres in crime-prone areas should reconsider opening’ — Kogi tells residents after church attack

The Kogi government says worship centres in “crime-prone areas” should reconsider opening until the state’s security situation improves.

On Sunday, gunmen attacked a newly established Cherubim and Seraphim Church during early morning service in Ejiba, Yagba West LGA of the state.

The assailants kidnapped a pastor, his wife, and several congregants during the attack.

Reacting to the abduction, Kingsley Fanwo, Kogi’s commissioner for information, urged the residents of the state to speak out when they notice unusual activities around them.

He added that security operatives are working to ensure a successful rescue of those abducted.

“I am also aware that the security network, comprising the conventional security agencies and the local security architecture are currently doing what they should do. We have no figures yet as we await security agencies to carry out their findings and report back to the public,” the commissioner said.

“We urge the citizens to be security-conscious and also report suspicious movements and faces to security agencies. When you see something, say something.

“Worship Centres in the outskirts should also reconsider worshipping in crime-prone areas for now until the situation gets better.”

On November 18, some worshippers were abducted when bandits attacked a branch of Christ Apostolic Church (CAC) at Oke Isegun in the Eruku community, a boundary town with Kogi in the Ekiti LGA of Kwara state.

Last Sunday, President Bola Tinubu announced that all the abducted worshippers have been rescued.
