Yakubu Mohammed, founding editor and director of Newswatch magazine, will on November 4 present his memoir titled Beyond Expectations – A Memoir in Lagos.
The 422-page book offers an in-depth account of Mohammed’s experiences as both an employee and employer, offering rare insights into pivotal moments in Nigerian journalism.
The book notably sheds light on the death of Dele Giwa, editor-in-chief of Newswatch, who was tragically killed by a parcel bomb.
After Giwa was killed via a parcel bomb on October 19, 1986, there were strong rumours that he was investigating the death of Gloria Okon in police custody.

In the book, Mohammed said the narrative about Giwa investigating Okon’s death in Lagos was a hoax which prevented a proper probe into his (Giwa’s) death.
Mohammed’s memoir also addresses the contentious takeover of Newswatch and its assets by Jimoh Ibrahim, a lawyer and businessman who later became a senator.
