Yari defeats father-in-law to retain Zamfara governorship

Abdulaziz Yari of the All Progressive Congress (APC) has been re-elected governor of Zamfara state.

In the result, which was declared at about 4.30am on Monday in Gusau, the returning officer, Abdullahi Zuru, declared Yari winner with a total vote of 716,964.

Mamuda Shinkafi, his closest rival, who is also his father in-law, ran on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and scored 201,938 votes to come second.

The All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) candidate and national secretary of the party, Sani Shinkafi, polled a total of 2,385 votes to come third.

Earlier on Sunday, the declaration of the results was marred by the demand of aggrieved youths for the  PDP candidate to be declared winner.

They were however dispersed by a joint security team made up of the army, police and men of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps.
