Ahmad Yerima, former Zamfara state governor, appeared before the judicial panel of inquiry sitting in Abuja on Wednesday, over his alleged complicity in threatening the life of Musa Wapa, a businessman.
The panel, which was set up to investigate allegations of human rights violations by the defunct special anti-robbery squad (SARS) and other units of the police, had summoned Yerima on December 2, 2020, following a petition by Wapa.
Wapa had accused Yerima of instigating the police intelligence response team (IRT) to torture and detain him for six days.
The businessman, while giving evidence in December, said the former governor owed him N25 million for the supply of three trailers of maize to his farm, Rufai Poultry (Nig.) Ltd.
He also admitted that he owed Yerima N23 million.
He, however, explained that while his obligation to pay Yerima the N23 million debt was not yet due, on June 30, 2020, the ex-governor allegedly paid money to a police team comprising officers of the Kano area command and the IRT in Kaduna, to torture and detain him for six days.
Wapa had urged the panel to award N100 million cost against the former governor as compensation for him.
At the resumed hearing on Wednesday, Garba Tetengi, who represented Suleiman Galadima, chairman of the panel, inquired from the parties if they were ready to settle the case amicably and report the terms of settlement to the panel.
In response, the two parties agreed to resolve the issue amicably.
Consequently, the counsel to the panel was directed to ensure amicable settlement between the parties.
