Yobe lifts ban on motorcycles in 7 LGAs — but not for commercial purposes

Mai Mala Buni, governor of Yobe, has lifted the ban on the use of motorcycles in seven LGAs of the state.

Motorcycles were banned in the state due to insecurity challenges.

In a statement issued on Monday, Dahiru Abdulsalam, special adviser on security affairs to Buni, said motorcycles will now operate between 6am and 6pm.

Abdulsalam however said they are not to be used for commercial purposes.

“The ban on motorcycles is hereby lifted with effect from March 6, in Bursari, Damaturu, Geidam, Gujba, Gulani, Tarmuwa and Yunusari,” he said.

“The ban is lifted with the following conditions: motorbikes are to operate between 6am and 6pm daily.

“Motorbikes are not to be used for commercial purposes. There will be no conveyance of passengers on motorbikes.

“Only one rider will be allowed without any other person on the motorbike. There should be proper registration, licencing, and documentation of all motorbikes and riders in the affected LGAs by the Yobe State Road Traffic Management Agency (YOROTA) and the Yobe State Vehicle Licencing Authority.”

The state also directed that motorbikes are to operate within their respective LGAs only.

“There would be no inter-local government area movement. Anyone found violating this condtion would be appropriately sanctioned,” Abdulsalam said.

“All security agencies are requested to monitor and ensure strict compliance with these directives.”
