Yoruba Koya Movement, a socio-cultural group, has declared June 12 as national day of protest against killings and kidnappings across Yoruba speaking states, including Kogi and Kwara.

In a statement, the organisers said protest tagged: “JUNE 12 O’TO ‘GE Rally” is backed by Voice of Reason (VOR), a Yoruba intelligentsia group, and 26 other socio-cultural and self-determination groups.

The protest will hold in all capitals of Ondo, Oyo, Ekiti, Lagos, Osun, Ogun, Kogi and Kwara states.

Maxwell Adeleye, national director of the organisation, said it is aimed at presenting the “Yoruba Charter of Demands to the federal government.

He added that a public petition would also be presented to the United Nations, European Union and African Union.

The high rate of insecurity in the land has generated different reactions from stakeholders.

On Friday, governors from south-west states announced their intention to hold a summit aimed at addressing security challenges in the region.

“There’s an urgent need to stem the growth of criminal activities and banditry in our region and as leaders, we must be proactive in our approach to addressing the issue,” Rotimi Akeredolu, governor of Ondo state, had said on behalf of the governors.
