‘You are a role model for your generation’ — Amina Mohammed hails Hamzat Lawal at 35

Amina Mohammed, deputy secretary-general of the United Nations (UN), says Hamzat Lawal, chief executive officer of Connected Development (CODE), is a role model to his generation. 

Mohammed said this at Lawal’s 35th birthday symposium in Abuja on Saturday.

She appreciated Lawal for his hardwork in grassroot activism, adding that there is still more work to be done to achieving the sustainable development goals (SDGs).

She added that young people like Lawal are taking up leadership in complex environments across the world and that keeps her hopeful for the future.

“Hamzat your grassroots activism, idealism and entrepreneurial strides are an inspiration. As a champion for the SDGs and good governance, you are a role model for your generation,” she said.

“Thank you so much for your hard work with Connected Development, Follow The Money, and your many other projects to build a better Nigeria and leave no one behind.

“I know your journey is only just beginning and I’m sure you’ll continue to surprise and impress us for many years to come. There is so much work still to be done, from COVID to conflicts, we face many serious challenges.

“But here is why I am hopeful for the future, I already see your generation taking leadership in complex environments across the globe. Whether on climate change, human rights, political participation, gender equality, young people like yourself are challenging the status quo and driving change in Nigeria and across the world.

“You are making a difference Hamzat, the United Nations is glad to be your partner. Together let us build a world where everyone can live in dignity, prosperity and live and in a safe and healthy plant. Happy birthday.”
