Edwin Clark, Ijaw leader, has asked Solomon Dalung, minister of sports, to resign over his alleged incompetence.
Clark accused the minister of running the affairs of the sports ministry with indiscipline and arrogance, saying Nigerian football cannot attain the desired height under him.
He made the accusations while reacting to comments credited to Dalung in which he challenged the legality of the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) congress in Katsina.
The minister reportedly said: “The current NFF board has no right to organise any election since the supreme court has ruled that they were not elected to run Nigerian football in the first place.”
In a statement Thursday, Clark also said the minister’s alleged disregard for the rule of law when the federation was enmeshed with leadership crisis shows “total disrespect and disloyalty in his open show of crass ignorance and incompetence”.
“At our current level in Nigeria, we must not condone or tolerate disloyalty, indiscipline, arrogance and mediocrity in any area of our public service,” he said.
“It is unfortunate that Mr. Dalung has come to personify the disagreement within the NFF, where he has wrongly misinterpreted the Supreme Court according to his whims and caprices.
“I repeat that, the Supreme Court did not give any definite judgment in favour of any body, and therefore, very improper of the minister to drag in the Supreme Court in his offensive statement.
“For the umpteenth time, and as canvassed in my earlier press statement, I must maintain that, in the overall interest of the future of football, and indeed, sports, generally, and for Nigeria to maintain its enviable position in Africa, and as we gradually make global impact, it’s no longer a matter of discretion that, the ministry of sports is not a place for the likes of Mr. Solomon Dalung, as minister.”
