You won’t return to power, Wike tells ADC coalition leaders

Nyesom Wike, minister of the federal capital territory (FCT), has challenged leaders of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) to show Nigerians their achievements while in office.

Months ago, talks of a coalition to possibly wrest federal control from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) began gathering steam.

Among the coalition leaders are Atiku Abubakar, the former vice-president; Rotimi Amaechi, a former transportation minister; Peter Obi, presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP) in the 2023 election; and el-Rufai, former Kaduna governor.

On Tuesday, opposition leaders adopted the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as the platform to challenge the ruling APC in the 2027 elections.

Speaking at the event to adopt the ADC platform, Ralph Nwosu, its immediate former national chairman, said the journey “started about 18 months back, and we have had over 12 NEC meetings”.

But Wike said if the coalition started 18 months ago, it means the politicians they started the coalition just six months after President Bola Tinubu took office.

The minister criticised the timeline, calling on the politicians to stop “deceiving Nigerians”.

“Somebody came into office and in six months, they started a coalition saying that the man has not performed,” he said.

“But you had an opportunity to be senate president for eight years, you had an opportunity to be speaker for four years, you had an opportunity to be minister of transportation for eight years. He never made angry Nigerians to be happy.

“But someone stayed in office for six months and be started telling people how Nigerians are angry. What kind of people are you angry?”

“I have said, everybody show your scorecard. God gave you an opportunity to be in office to make Nigerians to be happy but you refused.

“Because you have left office, you are angry. You are saying Nigerians are angry. You want to come back to power. You won’t come back. You will not come back to power.”
