‘You’ve brought Nigeria honour’ — Tinubu praises D’Tigress for reaching 2025 Afrobasket final

President Bola Tinubu said D’Tigress have brought honour to Nigeria with their “discipline, focus and team spirit” at the 2025 Women’s Afrobasket. 

The president praised D’Tigress in a statement following the team’s qualification for a fifth consecutive Women’s Afrobasket final.

On Saturday, Nigeria defeated Senegal 75-68 in the semi-final of the competition held in Cote d’Ivoire.

The team produced an impeccable final quarter to secure the match after the Senegalese raced to the lead in the third quarter.

Reacting to the victory, Tinubu commended the team’s resilience and dominance throughout the competition.

He also lauded Rena Wakama, D’Tigress head coach, for inspiring the team to new heights.

The president then assured D’Tigress of his support as the team pursues its fifth consecutive AfroBasket title and seventh overall.

D’Tigress will face Mali in the final of the competition, billed for 7 pm on Sunday.

The Nigerian team remain unbeaten in the Women’s Afrobasket over the last decade. The last time D’Tigress lost in the competition was on October 2, 2015, against Cameroon.

Nigeria is on course to be the first country to win the women’s Afrobasket five consecutive times.
