Yunusa Tanko, national coordinator of the Obidient Movement Worldwide, has dismissed claims of a rift between Peter Obi, presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP) in the 2023 elections, and Nenadi Usman.
Last week, Obi attended a rally organised to flag off the campaign of George Moghalu, LP’s governorship candidate in Anambra state.
Moghalu is backed by the faction of the party led by Julius Abure, while Obi belongs to the faction under the leadership of Usman.
Shortly after the campaign event, reports emerged suggesting that Obi was at odds with Usman, the LP caretaker committee chairperson.

Reacting in a statement on Wednesday, Tanko described the reports as “baseless rumours,” adding that the speculation was being fuelled by opposition elements seeking to sow division and cause distraction within the party.
He said Obi remains loyal to Usman and has consistently reaffirmed his commitment to the party under her leadership.
“His Excellency, Peter Obi, has consistently affirmed that he remains a member of the Labour Party under the leadership of Sen. Nenadi Usman,” he said.

“He has also clearly stated his support for all individuals who had previously secured the party’s ticket to contest political positions.”
Tanko said Obi’s presence at Moghalu’s campaign flag-off sparked a false narrative that he had distanced himself from the party leadership.
“The rumour that Peter Obi has betrayed Sen. Nenadi Usman is entirely baseless,” he said.
“Sen. Nenadi Usman, along with other key stakeholders in this movement, is fully aware of and supports the recent developments.

“Let’s not forget that Mr Peter Obi is a man of integrity, known for keeping his word. His decision to support Dr George Moghalu reflects that consistency.
“So far, the only individuals who have spoken on these matters are senators, members of the house of representatives, state assembly members, and I. This marks a clear departure from the old political order.”
Tanko urged the public to disregard the claims and focus on the party’s core objectives.
The LP has been entangled in a leadership crisis for months, with Abure, Usman, Callistus Okafor, and Lamidi Apapa each claiming to be the party’s legitimate leader.
