The Zamfara state government has awarded contracts for the renovation and reconstruction of primary schools across the 14 local government areas of the state.
This is coming a week after TheCable published an investigation into how the government snubbed recommendations which Zamfara state primary education assessment committee (ZSPEAC) submitted to it in 2012.
Chaired by Tukur Adamu, a professor, the committee found out that some of the primary schools exist only in name because they have no single structure.
Some operate in makeshift structures, mosques, Qur’anic schools and under trees.
The committee, in its recommendations, said there was the need for the government to provide public primary schools operating in such environments, with conventional school structures.
The government failed to implement any of the recommendations, even when in the subsequent fiscal years, funds were approved for the rehabilitation of schools across the states.
But on Monday, Abdulaziz Yari, governor of the state, presented letters to 351 indigenous contractors, mandating them to complete the jobs within three months.
He said the N3.6b project would be executed through the Zamfara State Universal Basic Education Board (ZSUBEB).
“We are executing these projects to revive our education sector in line with the recommendations given by various stakeholders and various government committees on education,” he said.
