Dauda Lawal, governor of Zamfara, has approved the establishment of a persons with disability (PWD) board in the state.

Lawal said the establishment of the board was done with the view to protecting the rights and promoting equal opportunities for PWDs.

Abubakar Nakwada, secretary to the state government, said the establishment follows recent amendments to the state’s law which protects PWDs from discrimination and ensures they have equal access to opportunities in all facets of society.

The amendments also make it mandatory for board members to be PWDs, ensuring that the board’s activities serve the interests of the community it represents.

The key changes to the law include substituting the titles ‘chairman’ with ‘executive chairman’, ‘executive secretary’ with ‘secretary’, and ‘part-time members’ with ‘full-time members’.

Lawal also appointed Usman Nahuche, a retired permanent secretary from the state civil service and a member of the auditory impaired, as pioneer executive chairman.

Other members include Amina B.M. Audu (spinal cords cluster), Tukur Abdullahi (cluster for the hearing impaired), Babangida Shinkafi (physically challenged), Umar Babangida (cluster for the visually impaired), Binta Namadi (women’s representative), and Sani Abubakar as a member.
