The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) in Zamfara has appealed to employers to enhance the welfare of corps members deployed to their organisations.

Muhammad Ahmed, the NYSC state coordinator, spoke on Thursday in Gusau during a workshop with employers.

The workshop focused on the theme: “Issues and Perspectives in Contemporary Corps Administration: The Role of Corps Employers Through the Use of Emotional Intelligence as a Panacea.”

Ahmed stressed the urgency of the appeal, citing the difficulties corps members encounter in adapting to new environments, particularly amid current economic hardships.

He underscored the importance of fostering a conducive environment to boost productivity and enable diligent service delivery.

The coordinator identified poor welfare, inadequate accommodation, rejection at postings, underutilisation, and employers aiding service evasion as persistent challenges hindering the successful completion of the service year.

He said Zamfara state is committed to improving corps member welfare, describing the relationship between the NYSC, employers, and other stakeholders in the state as cordial.

“I want to use the forum to appreciate the Zamfara government for its commitment to the welfare and security of corps members, particularly for approving new allowances for corps members,” he stated.

Ahmed called for stronger collaboration among NYSC stakeholders in the state to address challenges faced by corps members and maximise their contributions to the state’s development.

In response, Tasiu Musa-Shinkafi, the state commissioner for youth and sports development, reiterated the state government’s unwavering support for the scheme.

He acknowledged the collaborative efforts of corps members and stakeholders with the government in ensuring their welfare and security.
