Babagana Zulum, governor of Borno, has awarded university scholarships to 37 labourers working on houses for the resettlement of the internally displaced persons (IDPs) in the state.
Zulum made the announcement on Thursday during a visit to the construction site in Nguro Soye, a village in Bama LGA.
After interacting with the labourers, the governor said: “Let me know how many of you have completed secondary school and we will sponsor you to pursue undergraduate degrees at the university.”
Zulum also inspected the Umar Ibn Ibrahim College of Education, Science and Technology (UIICEST) in Bama which was destroyed during attacks by the insurgents.
In 2020, Zulum directed the National Commission for Refugees, Migrants, and Internally Displaced Persons (NCRMIDP) to work on building permanent resettlement houses for IDPs.
He also closed down all camps in Maiduguri, the state capital, in December 2021, and promised not to force the resettlement of displaced persons unwilling to return to their villages.
In September 2021, he handed over 1,000 housing units to IDPs in the state.
