Dutch legend Johan Cruyff has been diagnosed with lung cancer, according to reports in Spain.

Radio station RAC1 and Catalan newspaper Mundo Deportivo  have said the 68-year-old was diagnosed on Tuesday and is currently undergoing tests to discover the extent of his illness.

The story in Spanish newspaper, Mundo Deportivo, says the ex-Barcelona manager was given the news by doctors on Tuesday of this week.

Widely regarded as one of the greatest footballers of all time, Cruyff won three successive European Cups with Ajax before going on to play for Barcelona.

The three-time Ballon d’Or winner helped his country reach the World Cup final in 1974.

He went on to manage the Catalan side – winning four consecutive La Liga titles from 1990-91 to 1993-94 – before heart-bypass surgery eventually led to his retirement from football management in 1996.

His last managerial appointment came at the Catalonia national team, where he was in charge from 2009 to 2013.
