Ebola: Lesotho abandons U20 qualifier vs Eagles

Ebola: Lesotho abandons U20 qualifier vs Eagles

15:59 2014

Lesotho has pulled out of this weekend’s 2015 African Youth Championship qualifier against the Flying Eagles, citing concerns about the outbreak of Ebola in Nigeria.

Nigeria, the most successful country in the history of the championship, were to host Lesotho at the Ahmadu Bello Stadium, Kaduna in a repeat of the 1989 meeting between the two sides, which the Flying Eagles won 4-0 at Ibadan and 6-1 on aggregate. The withdrawal has put paid to an encounter that is typically full of goals.

“We have contacted the Confederation of African Football (CAF) and copied the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) that we will not be coming for this game,” Lesotho Football Federation official, Limtho Mokhethi, said.

The officials from Senegal appointed for the game have already arrived in Kaduna but CAF will now have to decide on the overall winners of the final qualifier, as a second leg in Lesotho is not expected to take place either.
