’10 suspected dead, 24 rescued’ — Lagos gives update on Ebute Metta building collapse

The Lagos fire and rescue service says a total of 10 persons suspected to be dead have been recovered from the scene of a building collapse that occurred in Ebute Metta area of the state.

The three-story building, located at 32, Ibadan street, Ebute Metta, collapsed on Sunday night.

In a statement issued on Monday evening, Margaret Adeseye, director of the Lagos fire and rescue service, said 24 persons were found alive.

“As we achieve Ground Zero of the Search and Rescue Operations, it is to be noted that the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service can account for the following: 24 (twenty four) persons were rescued alive with varying degrees of injury and all in stable condition, including 2 (two) which are responding to treatment,” the statement reads.

“Ten persons recovered suspected dead; 6 (six) males and 4 (four) females.

“All the first and major responders are still collaborating to mop up the incident scene.”

Meanwhile, President Muhammadu Buhari has expressed concern over the spate of building collapse incidents in the country.

In a statement issued on Monday by Femi Adesina, presidential spokesman, Buhari described such incidents as “embarrassing” and urged relevant agencies to work towards addressing the situation.

The president also prayed for speedy recovery for those injured, just as he expressed condolences to the family members of the deceased.
