About 100 shops with goods worth millions of naira have been destroyed in a fire outbreak that razed the Yan-Katato market in Sabo Gari LGA of Kaduna state.

Confirming the development, Mohammed Ashiru, chairman of Yan-Katato market, said the incident occurred on Wednesday.

Ashiru said the fire, as reported by the security guards, started by sparks from electricity cables that crossed over the market.

“The sparks generated fire particles which dropped on ceiling stalls in the market and subsequently led to the inferno,” NAN quoted Ashiru as saying.

The chairman said the fire could not be put out by the security guards, adding that the federal fire service intervened after several hours.

He sympathized with the owners of the affected shops and urged them to accept the incident as their fate.

Also confirming the incident, Abubakar Ibrahim, fire station officer of the federal fire service, said there were not enough water reservoirs, adding that inadequate of the facility delayed the fight to stop the fire.

Ibrahim called on the government to support the service with more reservoirs to enable proper service delivery.

On April 2, a fire outbreak razed a warehouse in Ikeja area of Lagos and destroyed properties worth millions.
