106-year-old woman who defeated Spanish flu recovers from COVID-19

Ana del Valle, a 106-year-old woman in Spain, has recovered from coronavirus, the oldest person to have survived COVID-19 in the European country.

Born on October 1913, she contracted the Spanish Flu in 1918 and recovered from the deadly disease. 102 years later, she got infected with coronavirus and she has recovered from the disease.

The Spanish Flu, an unusually deadly influenza pandemic which lasted for almost 36 months (from January 1918 to December 1920), infected as many as 500 million people, which was about a third of the world’s population at the time.

The Olive Press, a Spanish-based English newspaper, reported that Valle lived at a nursing home in Alcala del Valle, where she contracted the virus along with 60 other residents.

She was then transferred to a hospital in La Linea and was discharged a few days ago after she had overcome the disease.

The defeat of the virus makes her the oldest person to have recovered from the outbreak in Spain while Cornelia Ras, a 107-year-old Dutch, who is the oldest recovered from coronavirus in the world.

Commenting on her situation: Paqui Sanchez, Valle daughter-in-law, said: “Her doctors tell us that she has very good results, but you have to be very careful. She eats alone, some days more and other days less, she also goes on short walks with her walker.”

Spain currently has 219,764 confirmed cases of COVID-19 with 22,524 deaths and 92,355 recoveries, according to Worldometer.
