At least 19 fighters of the Islamic State of the West African Province (ISWAP) have reportedly surrendered to troops of Multinational Joint Task Force (MNJTF) in Borno.

According to Zagazola Makama, a counter-insurgency publication focused on the Lake Chad region, the insurgents surrendered alongside their family members on Friday.

The surrendered insurgents were received by troops of 242 battalion at Charlie 6 checkpoint located along Monguno in Maiduguri, the Borno capital.

The publication said those that surrendered included four men, five women and 10 children who all escaped from the group’s enclave.

Intelligence sources told Makama that the repentant terrorists and their families escaped from Tumbun Musarram and Tumbum Shuwaram areas in the Lake Chad Islands in Kukawa LGA.

The sources said seven  blankets, four mobile phones, mosquito net, some personal clothings and N399,500 were recovered from the surrendered fighters.

Makama said they are currently in the custody of sect 3 MIB for profiling and investigation.

Many insurgents, including their family members, have recently surrendered to troops of the Nigerian Army.

In June, about 73 ISWAP fighters surrendered to troops of sector 1, operation Hadin Kai in Borno.
