The Nigerian army says more than 200 Boko Haram insurgents in Banki, Borno state, have surrendered to its troops.‎

Sani Usman, army spokesman, disclosed this to reporters on Friday.

“We have over 200 Boko Haram terrorists that have surrendered; the information came about 30 minutes ago,” he said.

“This is largely due to the gallant efforts of our troops. I am happy to inform you that last Thursday by 5 pm. Banki fell to our troops. As am talking to you now, they are right inside the Banki town’.”

He said the military had also apprehended a suspected insurgent trying to plant an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) at a mosque in Maiduguri.

“A day before Sallah, at exactly 11pm, we were able to apprehend somebody who went on a surveillance to the Madinnatu Mosque in Maiduguri; he was trying to survey the place with a view to planting an IED,” he said.

“Luckily for us, he was caught and he is leading us to those who planted the unfortunate IEDs that killed scores of people last Sunday at Ajilari Cross in Maiduguri.”

He explained that the suspect was apprehended after some persons had alerted security agents.

“This is the kind of information that we require from the public,” he said.

“I want to assure you that we are trying all what it takes to end the insurgency in no distant future.”

Show us some photos or video feeds like the Chadians and Camerounian forces do. Credibility is of the essence . We don’t believe your spurious claims any more. This counter insurgency campaign is becoming mired in lies, deceit and stupid Nigerian politics. One day, all territories have been regained from terrorists, the next Banki and Gamboru have been liberated from terrorists who were not holding any territory. Terrorists “surrender” and the next day they attack in exactly the same area. We wish the Armed Forces well, but this campaign of deceit and innuendo will not pass muster.
