Faith Akuji, a 10-year-old girl, has been reportedly raped to death by Augustine Akor, the victim’s relation, in Enugu.

The girl is from Ette community in Igbo-nze North local government area (LGA), Enugu state.

The alleged rapist was arrested on Monday by vigilante operatives in the area and detained at the police command.

Daniel Ndukwe, spokesman of Enugu state police command, said Akor had confessed to the crime.

“A 10-year-old got missing in the evening of June 8, 2023, after her grandfather sent her to grind cassava in the community centre. All efforts made to trace her whereabouts proved abortive,” the statement reads.

“Her decomposing body was however found in a bush at Mpole Ubere in Ette community, following the arrest of the suspect, who confessed to have dragged his victim into a nearby bush and forcefully had carnal knowledge of her until she fainted and died in the process.”

The spokesman added that “the case is undergoing further discreet investigation at the homicide section of the state criminal intelligence and investigation department, from where the suspect will be arraigned in court upon conclusion of investigation”.

Ahmed Ammani, the state police commissioner, while offering his condolence, described the offence as atrocious and unthinkable.

He instructed that the case be carefully and speedily handled.
