24 teams will compete in AFCON from 2019

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) executive committee has passed a resolution to increase the teams participating in the African Cup of Nations from 16 to 24.

The expansion will come into effect at the 2019 tournament in Cameroon.

The decision was made in Rabat, Morocco on Thursday at a meeting of CAF executives.

CAF’s flagship event has featured 16 teams since 1996.

A two-day symposium on the future of African football convened by CAF president Ahmad Ahmad culminated in the decision to expand the continental tournament.

On Friday, CAF’s extraordinary general assembly will decide whether or not to move the finals from January and February to June and July.
