Gunmen have reportedly burnt a 90-year-old man to death during an attack on Pobawure and Antawalam communities in Billiri LGA of Gombe.

According to NAN, Oqua Etim, commissioner of police in the state, confirmed the development on Friday.

The gunmen were said to have attacked the communities on Wednesday night.

Etim said the 90-year-old man was set ablaze in his hut, adding that two residents were killed after sustaining machete injuries.

He said the attack was an attempt to destroy property as nothing was stolen from the communities.

The commissioner said security operatives have been mobilised to the affected communities, adding that the command will work to ensure the attackers are brought to justice.

Speaking on Friday during a visit to the affected communities, Inuwa Yahaya, governor of Gombe, directed the establishment of a police post in the area to ensure adequate security for citizens.

Yahaya, while commiserating with members of the communities, expressed concern over the food items set ablaze by the attackers, adding that the government will adopt extra measures to protect the residents.

“It is a clear indication that they were out to cause confusion and destruction. We shall address the issue and will send them out of our communities,” he said.

“I have directed the setting up of a police outpost with an adequate number of personnel alongside sister security agencies to ensure that the communities are secured.

“We have taken necessary steps to safeguard lives and property, knowing well that Gombe is among the most peaceful states nationwide.
