Senate President Godswill Akpabio has been elected into the executive committee of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU).

Akpabio led Nigeria’s delegation to the IPU’s 147th general assembly in Luanda, Angola.

In a statement on Friday, Anietie Ekong, special assistant to Akpabio on media and communication, said the senate president is the first Nigerian to be elected into the committee since 1946.

TheCable has asked the press office of the IPU to clarify the claim.

Ekong said Akpabio was “overwhelmingly” voted for by delegates across the world to become an executive committee member.

The IPU is the global organisation of national parliaments founded in 1889 that is dedicated to promoting peace through parliamentary diplomacy and dialogue.

The organisation has over 179 countries as members.

This year’s IPU general assembly assembly deliberated on issues affecting nations across the world and considered actions to strengthen trust between people and governance structures.

The assembly also deliberated on how to make institutions more effective, accountable and representative.

Lawmakers from across the world tabled multiple interconnected geopolitical, economic and environmental crises facing the world.
