America’s Sofia Kenin has beaten Spanish Garbine Muguruza to clinch her first grand slam women singles title at the 2020 Australian Open.

The fourteenth seed won the Daphne Akhurst trophy for the first time on Saturday after coming back from a set down to triumph over Muguruza in three sets with 4-6, 6-2, 6-2 in a thrilling duel.

Kenin – the youngest singles finalist since Maria Sharapova beat Ana Ivanovic in 2008 – won the 108th edition of the Australian Open and the 52nd in the Open Era.

“This is my first speech and I’m going to try my best. I want to congratulate Garbine on a great final and a great two weeks,” she said on court after accepting the trophy.

“My dream officially came true. I cannot describe this feeling. It’s so emotional, I worked so hard. Dreams come true. If you work for it, it’s going to come true. These past two weeks have been the best two weeks of my life. I thank you all from the bottom of my heart.”

The 21-year-old American is expected to break into the top 10 and would leapfrog Serena Williams to no. 7 and US no. 1 — having won the title.
