Arase withdraws orderlies from politicians
Solomon Arase, inspector-general of police (IGP), has ordered the withdrawal of policemen from politicians, in response to the shortage of officers to provide security across the country.
Arase said only top politicians should be allowed to have orderlies, and directed that those to be withdrawn should be posted to sensitive areas where their services are needed.
He gave the directive in Minna, Niger state capital, during a tour of the state police command.
The IGP lamented that the challenge of inadequate officers was affecting the efficiency of the force in providing security, noting that there are less than 8000 policemen in all of Niger state.
Arase decried a situation where the police had not conducted any recruitment in the last five years but added that the Muhammadu Buhari administration was aware and making efforts to find a solution.
He commended his men for their efforts despite the challenges, and urged them to continue to give their best.
Arase also cautioned them on the need to be civil in the course of discharging their duties and to avoid trampling on the rights of the people.
We have heard this kind of report severally in the past and it only implies that the orderlies really never left the politicians. What’s the point in repeating the same thing if it cannot be implemented effectively?
