The African Union Peace and Security Council has extended the mandate of the multinational joint task force (MJTF) in the fight against Boko Haram/ISWAP until February 2024.

The mandate was extended on Monday after a poll was conducted at the headquarters of the MJTF in N’Djamena, Chad.

The MNJTF presently operates in Chad, Cameroon and Nigeria.

Bankole Adeoye, AU commissioner for political affairs, peace and security; Mamman Nuhu, executive secretary of Lake Chad Basin Commission and head of mission for MJTF; Abul Khalifa Ibrahim, MJTF commander, were present at the event.

They commended the MJTF for the successes recorded in neutralising key terrorist leaders and decimating their logistics support bases.

They also urged the MJTF to carry out more operations which will force the terrorists to surrender unconditionally or face elimination.

The development comes months after the MJTF killed dozens of ISWAP fighters in Borno state following intelligence indicating that they were converging in large numbers.
