Betta Edu, the national women leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC), has been honoured for promoting gender inclusion and women empowerment in the country.

Remi Tinubu, First Lady of Nigeria, announced the award on Tuesday during the renaming of the National Centre for Women’s Development (NCWD) in Abuja.

Tinubu renamed the centre after the late Maryam Babangida in recognition of her “outstanding role in championing women development” during her stint as first lady.

Edu’s award was facilitated by the Maryam Babangida National Center For Women Development in collaboration with the ministry of women affairs and social development.

The award was in recognition of “her dedication to advocating for the empowerment of women, children and vulnerable groups in Nigeria”.

It also recognises her role in mobilising support for President Bola Tinubu during the recent general election.

Edu served as special adviser and health commissioner to Benedict Ayade, former governor of Cross River state.

In 2020, she became the chairperson of the Cross River COVID-19 task force and was later appointed as national chairperson of the Nigeria health commissioners forum.

She was appointed national women leader of the APC in 2022.
