Brazil’s president, Dilma Rousseff, will be facing another round of election after securing 42 per cent votes in the country’s election, which held on Sunday.

The run-off has been slated for October 26 and Aecio Neves, who polled 34 per cent is her only opponent.

Marina Silva, prominent environmentalist and the other female aspirant in the race, got only 21 per cent and is therefore ineligible to participate in the run-off.

In her concession speech, Silva thanked her supporters, saying she had no regret taking the bold step.

“It was a battle between David and Goliath,” she said.

“I will never regret the decision we made not to do just anything to win the election at any cost.”

On her part, Rousseff promised to continue working towards transforming the country if reelected.

“I clearly understood the message from the streets and from the ballot boxes. The majority of Brazilians want us to speed up the Brazil we are building,” she said.

Neves, a senator and former governor, called on Silva’s supporters to back him, saying he represents hope for change.

“I am the best project for Brazil and Brazilians who want the country growing again, generating jobs and improving the lives of people,” he said.

Silva and leaders of her party are expected to meet and to discuss whom to endorse for the run-off.

An estimated 142 million people were eligible to partake in Sunday’s election.
