Hillary Clinton, US Democratic Party presidential nominee, has named Senator Tim Kaine as her running mate for the presidential election holding in November.

Clinton announced the 58-year-old former Virginia governor via a text message to her supporters on Friday.

Kaine, who sits on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, is expected to boost Hillary’s chances of defeating Donald Trump, Republican Party nominee, in the general election.

Clinton was said to have avoided picking a less experienced vice-presidential candidate and also decided against selecting another woman or a minority as running mate.

She will formally introduce Kaine as her running mate at a campaign stop on Saturday at Florida International University in Miami.

Kaine is believed to have been selected ahead of Thomas E. Perez, the secretary of labour; Cory Booker, a US senator from New Jersey; James G. Stavridis, a retired four-star Navy admiral; and Tom Vilsack, Agriculture Secretary.
