Court sentences cleric to death for killing his friend in Lagos

A Lagos high court sitting at the Tafawa Balewa Square, on Wednesday, sentenced Fatai Afobaje, identified as a 34-year-old cleric, to death for killing his friend and mutilating the body.

Modupe Nicol-Clay, the presiding judge, sentenced the cleric to death after finding him guilty.

Afobaje was sentenced on a two-count charge of conspiracy to commit murder and murder.

The judge held that the Lagos government prosecuting the case was able to prove that the convict caused the death of his friend, 44-year-old Rafiu Sulaiman.

According to NAN, the convict has been remanded since his arraignment in 2017, during which he pleaded not guilty.

The prosecution team, led by Adesola Adekunle-Bello, called six witnesses and tendered 12 exhibits during trial.

The prosecution had told the court that the convict murdered Sulaiman and mutilated his body by cutting off his head, intestines, lungs, scrotum and hands.

The incident was said to have happened on February 13, 2015, at Itire village in Magbon, Badagry, Lagos state.

According to the prosecution, the offences contravened sections 221 and 231 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.
