The Enugu state police command has asked residents of the state to disregard the sit-at-home order by the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).
This is contained in a statement issued on Monday by Daniel Ndukwe, the state police spokesperson.
IPOB on July 30 ordered a sit-at-home in the south-east every Monday until Nnamdi Kanu, its leader, is released from the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS).
The proscribed group said the lockdown tagged ‘Ghost Monday’ will also affect schools and marketplaces.
It threatened to shut down economic activities in the region, adding that violators of the order will be visited with violence.
According to NAN, the police, in its statement, reiterated its resolve to adequately ensure public safety, enforce and maintain law and order in the state.
It also warned trouble makers and enemies of public peace to steer clear of the state or face the full wrath of the law.
“The command, therefore, enjoins peace-loving citizens of the state to go about their lawful businesses,” the statement reads.
“Residents should disregard sit-at-home orders not issued or approved by any statutorily recognised organ or authorised Ministry, Department or Agency (MDA) of government.
“This includes one purportedly restricting public movements and businesses on Monday, August 9 by pro-Biafran groups.
“Accordingly, any individual or group(s), who may want to hide under the guise of such illegitimate order to foment trouble in the state have been warned to desist forthwith.
“As anything in the contrary will be vehemently resisted and handled in accordance with the law.”
The police spokesman also asked the residents to remain vigilant and promptly report acts of criminality or breach of public peace to the nearest police station.
