The Russian investigative committee says efforts are underway to identify the bodies involved in the plane crash that happened on Wednesday.

Yevgeny Prigozhin, leader of the mercenary Wagner Group, was believed to be aboard the plane after Russia’s agency for air transport listed him among the casualties.

In a telegram post on Friday, the country’s investigative committee said 10 bodies had been found in the preliminary stages of the probe, and added that a DNA test would be used to confirm their identities.

“During the initial investigative actions, the bodies of 10 dead were found at the crash site. To establish their identities, molecular genetic examinations are being carried out,” the post reads.

“The flight recorders were confiscated, and a detailed examination of the scene continues.

“Currently, items and documentation that are important for establishing all the circumstances of the crash are also being seized, and the necessary forensic examinations will be appointed.

“The investigation will carefully check all possible versions of what happened.”

Russian President Vladimir Putin extended his condolences to the victims’ families, saying Prigozhin “was a talented businessman”.

The Russian president said investigators would look into what happened but added that it would take time.
