The Coalition of Civil Society on National and Community Security Developments, has urged President Bola Tinubu not to appoint a national security adviser (NSA) as “political compensation”.

In a statement on Tuesday, Romanus Azubuike, the group’s convener, said the president must appoint an individual that is “knowledgeable, innovative…that understands the security architecture of Nigeria”.

Babagana Monguno, the current NSA of the federation, was appointed in 2015 by former President Muhammadu Buhari.

The coalition said Nigeria has been battling “issues of banditry, kidnapping, farmer-herdsmen clashes, illegal mining and oil bunkering,” hence the country needs “not just a competent man” for NSA but an individual who is “proactive, bold, calculative, well respected”.

The group warned Tinubu that “there is no room for mediocrity and lukewarmness” in the position but “a tried and tested hand”.
