Kayode Egbetokun, inspector-general of police (IGP), is seeking the establishment of a N100 billion fund to finance affordable houses for police officers across the country.

Egbetokun spoke on Monday during the first Nigeria Police Force (NPF) housing summit in Abuja.

The summit was attended by Ahmed Dangiwa, minister of housing, Solomon Arase, chairman of the Police Service Commission (PSC), and other top police officers.

The summit was themed: ‘Renewed Hope for Police Housing in Nigeria’.

Speaking during the summit, Egbetokun said only 10 percent of police housing needs is being currently met, adding that neglect has rendered existing barracks uninhabitable.

The IGP said the purpose of the summit is to “develop strategies to bridge this gap and ensure accessible and affordable housing for all ranks” of the police.

In a statement by Muyiwa Adejobi, force spokesperson, Egbetokun was quoted as saying engagement with stakeholders on the N100 billion housing fund has commenced.

The IGP said the launch of the police housing summit is part of his administration’s vision of providing “accessible and affordable housing to its officers”.

“The housing summit also focuses on the establishment of a N100 billion police housing fund, aimed at financing sustainable housing development for officers,” the statement reads.

“The IGP notes that preliminary assessments and engagements with key stakeholders are already underway in this regard.”
