Lashin Ibrahim, head of Egypt’s national election authority (NEA), died on Friday of COVID-19 complications.

Ibrahim had reportedly been receiving treatment at a private hospital after testing positive for the virus over two weeks ago.

He will be buried on Friday in Qalioubiya, his home governorate.

According to Egypt Today, Ibrahim earned a degree in Law in 1980, and started his career at the Egyptian public prosecution office, before he moved on to the position of attorney at the public funds prosecution.

Lashin was appointed to head the NEA in 2017 following his nomination by the supreme judicial council.

He oversaw the Egypt presidential elections in 2018, a referendum on amendments to the country’s constitution in 2019, and parliamentary elections in 2020.

As of December 25 and according to Worldometer, an online global statistics platform, Egypt has recorded more than 128,000 cases of coronavirus since the country’s first positive sample was confirmed in February.

However, 7,260 deaths and over 108,000 recoveries have also been recorded in the North African country.
