The Nigeria police force has redeployed Nwodibo Ekechukwu, Enugu state police commissioner, one week after an suspected herdsmen attacked Ukpabi Nimbo community in Enugu state.
According to an announcement by Bisi Kolawole, police public relations officer, Ekechukwu has been posted out of the state to another command, while a new CP, Emmanuel Ojukwu, has taken over.
“The redeployment is part of strategies to improve police effectiveness across the country,” Kolawole simply said.
Ojukwu, his replacement, is a former police public relations officer.
Last week, dozens were killed and others injured in an attack carried out by suspected herdsmen in Ukpabi Nimbo, Uzo-Uwani local government area of the state.
The police were unable to forestall the deaths, and then denied that the attack was carried out by herdsmen, only to make a detour after several witnesses spoke up.
Ekechukwu’s redeployment is coming after President Muhammadu Buhari ordered Solomon Arase, the inspector-general of police, to apprehend the attackers.
Thereafter, at a meeting with catholic bishops on Tuesday, the president also ordered heads of security agencies to “deal decisively and expeditiously” with the suspected herdsmen, who have wreaked havoc on different communities across the country.
Arase had earlier ordered that a policeman simply identified as Corporal Chukwu be apprehended if found guilty of the allegations of collaborating with the herdsmen.
