The Civil Liberties Organisation (CLO) has called on Chukwuma Soludo, Anambra governor, to pardon and reinstate Damian Ezeani, traditional ruler of Neni community in the state.

The traditional ruler was suspended for conferring a chieftaincy title on Ifeanyi Ubah, senator representing Anambra south district, without obtaining the permission of the traditional ruler of the recipient’s community, or the ministry of local government, chieftaincy and community affairs.

Speaking with NAN on Friday, Vincent Ezekwueme, chair of the CLO in Anambra, said “mercy is more fruitful and rewarding than strict justice” and “similarly to err is human but to forgive is divine”.

He said Soludo should reinstate the traditional ruler in order not to give credence to speculation that his suspension has political undertone.

He said reinstating the monarch would also restore respect, dignity and honour accorded traditional rulers and institutions.

“We appeal to all Anambra political gladiators, supporters and Anambra people to work assiduously towards the restoration of absolute peace, security, unity, tolerance and harmonious coexistence,” he said.

“We wish to reiterate our earlier appeal to our political leaders to call their overzealous supporters to order to douse political tension in the state and restore normalcy, peace and tranquility.

“It is very unfortunate and despicable. This unbridled character assassination, name calling, casting unsubstantiated aspersions on perceived and imaginary opponents, should be halted through collective and collaborative efforts.

“The mission to rescue the state, bring peace, accelerated socioeconomic development, security and tranquility should begin with individuals and groups in the state.”
