Gunmen attack police officers, soldiers at checkpoint in Enugu

Gunmen have attacked a combined security team of police and military officers at a checkpoint in Amodu, Nkanu West LGA, Enugu state. 

The incident was said to have happened in the early hours of Tuesday.

The gunmen stormed the checkpoint in two Lexus RX SUV and one Toyota Sienna and opened fire on the security operatives.

The security operatives were, however, said to have repelled the attack.

Confirming the incident to TheCable, Daniel Ndukwe, spokesperson of the Enugu police command, said the security operatives are currently on the trail of the assailants.

“There was an attack on a joint operation team checkpoint at Amodu in Nkanu West LGA, in the morning hours of today, 27/09/2022,” he said.

“However, I await a full briefing on the incident due to the ongoing intense manhunt of the masked assailants, most of whom escaped the scene of the incident with fatal gunshot injuries, after the gun duel with the team.

“Further development will be communicated, please.”

On September 7, three police officers were killed by gunmen in Enugu state.

Speaking on the attack, the state police command had said the officers were on night patrol when they were attacked.
