Peter Obi, presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP) in the last elections, has responded to the claim that he did not build any school as governor of Anambra state.

Speaking in Abuja on Wednesday at a press conference, Obi said he improved the educational system in Anambra as the governor.

Last weekend, Reno Omokri, a former aide to ex-President Goodluck Jonathan, said Obi did not build any school during his tenure in Anambra.

Omokri challenged supporters of the former Anambra governor to name one school built by Obi and get $10,000.

“I am giving a challenge. I will give any (Obidient) $10,000 if they can name one school that Peter Obi started, completed and commissioned while he was governor of Anambra state,” he had said.

Obi was the governor of Anambra on three different occasions from 2006 to March 2014 due to legal issues.

During the press conference, a journalist asked Obi to react to the claim that he did not build any school in Anambra as a governor.

The former governor said many people do not read the manifestos of candidates contesting for elective positions.

Obi said when he was campaigning for the Anambra governorship, he promised to change the educational system in the state.

The LP presidential candidate narrated how the ranking of Anambra in terms of education improved during his administration.

“When I was campaigning for governor. I hope you are aware, that for two years, schools were shut in Anambra. Anambra school system was very low in rating,” he said.

“I said I will change the educational system in Anambra state, where schools would never be closed. I would make sure I gave the best to education.

“We had an issue with male children not going to schools. I said I will revive that and make sure that Anambra state becomes one of the best.

“When I started, we were number 26 and 26 on WAEC and NECO. By the time I left, we were number one.

“When I was the governor, I knew the state of the school. Every secondary school had a borehole, computers, vehicles and generators. No other state in this country was able to do that.”

“I believe that I did the right thing, those who are looking for the wrong thing… when I promised the people, I delivered.”
