The World Health Organisation (WHO) has pegged the casualties from the ongoing Israel-Hamas war in the Gaza Strip at over 30,000.

In a tweet on Thursday, Tedros Ghebreyesus, WHO director-general, said a large majority of the figures are women and children.

Over 70,000 Palestinians have been injured, Ghebreyesus added.

He called for an end to “this horrific violence and suffering” and urged for a ceasefire.

The WHO director-general did not quote a source but the figures tally with the data that the Hamas-run health ministry in Gaza earlier put out.

The ministry has reported that 30,035 people have been killed so far in the war.

Volker Turk, UN high commissioner for human rights said what is happening in Gaza is a “carnage”.

“There appears to be no bounds, no words, to capture the horrors that are unfolding before our eyes in Gaza,” Turk said.

“It is time, well past time, for peace, investigation and accountability.”

Israel figures say about 10,000 Hamas fighters have been killed since October 7, when it declared war on the militant group after it launched an attack on the Jewish nation.

The UN has warned that a quarter of Gaza’s population is now at risk of famine, noting that there has been an uptick in infectious diseases worsened by a shortage of medicines and lack of medical care.
