ISWAP fighters ‘flee with casualties’ as troops repel attack on military base in Yobe

Troops of 27 task force battalion, sector 2 of Operation Hadin Kai, have repelled an attack by the Islamic State West African Province (ISWAP) fighters in Yobe.

According to Zagazola Makama, a counter-insurgency publication focused on the Lake Chad region, the attack, which happened around 3 am on Monday, was targeted at Charlie Compang — the location of 120 task force, battalion behind Buni Yadi community, in Gujba LGA of the state. 

Intelligence sources in the military told the publication that an unspecified number of ISWAP fighters on three gun trucks and four motorcycles, from Kaushuruwa, invaded the community. 

The publication reported that the troops successfully repelled the attack during a gun duel with the fighters, forcing them to flee into the bush with gunshot wounds “as traces of blood were seen all over the places at the withdrawal route of the terrorists”.

One of the sources said the attack was a reprisal against the killing of five ISWAP fighters during an operation by the troops last Thursday. 

During the attack, the troops overwhelmed the terrorists with superior firepower as 1 Conqueror APC, 4 Ak47 rifles with 4 extra Magazines, 1 GPMG, 1 NSVT GUN 1, Baofeng radio and 150 quantities of 12.7 MM rounds among others, were recovered.
