Fire breaks out at Ladipo plank market in Lagos

A fire outbreak has been recorded in the Ladipo pako market on Iganmu road, Orile area of Lagos state.

The fire reportedly broke out on Tuesday night.

Adeseye Margaret, director of Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, said the incident was reported at about 11:45pm on Tuesday.

She said the fire, which raged overnight, was doused through the combined efforts of fire crews from Sari Iganmu, Ajegunle, Ilupeju and Bolade stations of the agency, with complimentary help from the Federal Fire Service and LASEMA.

“The sawmill market that also trade in building materials as the fire rapidly spreads because of the combustible materials involved that include inflammatory wood polish and given the dryness of the season but however met the competency of the firefighters,” she said.

“The cause of the fire cannot be immediately ascertain but will be revealed after the mop up of the exercise that is at dampening down stage along with enumeration of the property and cost.

“No casualty has been recorded in this operation as further detail will subsequently made known.”

The Ladipo market was recently opened after it was closed by the state government over “reckless waste disposal, unhygienic premises, and non-payment of waste bills”.

Tokunbo Wahab, commissioner for environmment and water resources, had said the move was part of ongoing efforts to ensure compliance with regulations in markets across the state.

In recent times, fire outbreaks have been recorded in different parts of the state.

On Saturday, a three-storey building located at Dosunmu street, Lagos Island was gutted by fire.

On September 19, two people were rescued from a fire incident that occurred at Victory Bay, Ikota housing estate in the Ajah area of the state.

Two days after, five shops and the Hotel Ibis Royale along airport road, Ajao estate in Isolo, were razed by fire.

On September 23, another fire outbreak was recorded at Mega Plastic at the Ilupeju area of Lagos.
