Abba Yusuf, governor of Kano, has ordered an investigation into “inappropriate deductions” from salaries of civil servants.

He has also ordered a suspension of deductions from the revenue of government-owned hospitals by some firms.

The governor gave the instructions in a couple of letters signed by Abdullahi Bichi, secretary to the state government (SSG).

One of the circulars ordered the suspension of “inappropriate deductions of the sum of N370.00 each from the salaries and pensions of all civil servants and pensioners in the state”.

“Government has observed with great concern the inappropriate deductions of the sum of N370.00 each from the Salaries and Pensions of all Civil Servants and Pensioners in the State and afterwards, remitted to Share Benefit Investment Limited,” the circular reads.

“In view of this, His Excellency, the Executive Governor of Kano State, Alh. Abba Kabir Yusuf has granted approval for the immediate suspension of the deductions as well as the remittances being made to the aforementioned firm, pending an investigation into the circumstances that led to the improper deductions.”

In another notice directed at the state’s ministry of health, Yusuf ordered the suspension of “inappropriate deductions of the sum of 16.25% each from the income/revenue generated by some hospitals in the Kano metropolis”.

The circular added that the deductions are being remitted to “ITC Global System and Polaris Bank Limited”.

Since his inauguration as Kano governor, Yusuf has been rolling back some of the policies of Abdullahi Ganduje, his predecessor.

The governor has embarked on the demolition of structures erected by Ganduje.
