The Lagos state government says it will discontinue the 50 percent discount on transport services on Sunday.

On July 31, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, governor of Lagos, announced a 50 percent reduction in the fares charged by  all state-owned transport services.

The governor had said the move is part of the palliatives being rolled out by the state government to cushion the effects of the petrol subsidy removal and the attendant hike in the prices of the commodity.

In a notice on Saturday, the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA) said from November 6, transport fares will return to status quo.

“The 50% rebate in transport fare in the regulated transport system in Lagos ends on Sunday,” the notice reads.

“The 50% fare rebate was announced by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu on 2nd August 2023.

“The public is hereby informed that from Monday, 6th November 2023, transport fare will return to the pre-2nd August 2023 rate.”

On February 8, Sanwo-Olu had made a similar move and announced a 50 percent reduction in the prices of all state-owned transport services.

The governor had said the measures were initiated due to the hardship faced by residents over petrol and cash scarcity.

He had also announced the provision of food banks in vulnerable areas of the state.

The 50 percent price was discontinued on April 1.
