The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) says operatives of the agency have averted a gas explosion in the Surulere area.

On Monday, Adebayo Taofiq, the director of public affairs of LASTMA, said an articulated vehicle laden with  Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) fell off while in motion around Lawanson bus stop, opposite the Total filling station.

He said the incident occurred at 7:40 pm, adding that the state fire service and security operatives immediately arrived at the scene to curtail and manage the situation.

“LASTMA personnel arrived at the scene at exactly 7:40 pm and immediately called other emergency responders particularly the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Services and LASTMA Response Unit,” Taofiq said.

“Policemen from Itire police station provided security backup to LASTMA personnel headed by traffic officer Adeyemo Olanrewaju and other emergency responders at the scene, in order to guide against any fire explosion around the fallen gas tank.”

A similar incident occurred on September 2 in Surulere when a tanker conveying gas leaked its content around the Barracks bus stop area.

The tanker was said to have developed a fault around its inlet compartment. Operatives of the fire service had quickly doused the situation.
