Libyan troops arrest ISIS commander

The Libyan National Army has arrested one Mohammed Mailed Mohammed better known as Abu Omar, an ISIS commander, at Ubari in the southern part of the country.

Libya Review, a news outlet, did not state when the arrest happened but it reported the development on Sunday.

According to the Institute For Security Studies, more than 10,000 fighters have joined ISIS in North Africa and this has given a boost to the activities of Boko Haram in north-eastern Nigeria.

Boko Haram is said to be a splinter group of the Islamic State in West Africa Province (ISWAP) which has ISIS as its parent organisation.

“In West Africa, Boko Haram pledged allegiance to ISIS in 2015,” the institute said in a report.

“However the group does not rely on ISIS for resources or operational support, and Boko Haram’s recruitment base still primarily originates from north-east Nigeria and countries of the Lake Chad region.”
