Security operatives have successfully flushed out Boko Haram insurgents from Bama, the second largest town in Borno state, according to an unnamed government official.
The insurgents captured the town last week Monday, forcing the military to declare a total war.
Several airstrikes were launched in the town, which has a population of over 200,000 people.
However, a senior government official told Reuters on Monday that the military has been able to send the militants towards Maiduguri, the state capital and neighbouring Adamawa state.
“Bama has been recaptured by the soldiers and I can confirm to you Maiduguri is safe,” said the official
Babagana Modu, a trader in the town, confirmed the news.
He said soldiers were now in control of the town.
However, TheCable could not independently confirm these claims.
The sect has been launching attacks on different communities, particularly in the three north-eastern state presently under the state of emergency.
The sect has reportedly seized two Adamawa towns – Gulak and Michika.
